8 years ago, I saw Brian Ferry live, who played a number of his Roxy Music hits from 'Avalon'. During one of them, a middle-aged woman behind me yelled, "Best. Baby-Making. Music. EVER!" I couldn't agree more.
This music, Bryan Ferry, Roxy Music... the volume and weight of the memories it evokes is almost painful. Such beauty and elegance but it can be so poignant too.
I love this album so much- it is such a progression from 70’s Roxy Music. It clearly influenced everyone- (Duran Duran shamelessly). People forget how soulful 80’s music could be- what took away from it was overproduction in the 80’s. Synths, electronic drums and too much reverb took away from the music. Roxy had excellent production and it never sounds dated just modern. The romantic nature of this album is what makes it so special and unique- it was like a perfect soundtrack to any situation you could dream up.
Such a memorable album, as was the one that preceded it, ‘Flesh + Blood’. They had moved away from the avant garde to the mainstream but still making highly sophisticated music. The video for the title track of this album was beautifully understated and has arguably never been bettered.
Good grief, reading that back I seem like Patrick Bateman talking about Huey Lewis 😄
Songletter, you did it again! I subscribed to yet another one of your requested bands. ‘Avalon’ is another fantastic song. Roxy Music is an excellent, soft, rhythmic group. Thank you again, Songletter!
Your post led me to look up the wiki on Avalon and the story of Yanick Étienne's participation in the album is one i had never heard. it speaks to how random the creative process can be and Bryan Ferry's inquisitive nature. What a wonderful story, song and album.

I was married for 35 years and Avalon was our song.
Wow, a perfect song!
An all-time fave. And I never get tired of listening to Bryan Ferry's incredible crooning.

Roxy Music a great band, Avalon an awesome album, I will admit that Jealous Guy is my all time favorite Roxy song
Succeeds in being elegant rock music. Pretty much the standard for that "category. "
It’s a whole vibe on repeat
