Ripley (the main dude behind Wooden Shjips) now lives here in Portland and is currently moving in a more hippie, country psych direction (think 1970 Grateful Dead) and releasing music as the Rose City Band. He and his wife also formed Moon Duo, which was similar to Shjips but more hypnotic and trancey. I saw MD in 2019, and they had this really cool transparent tent that covered them and the stage. You could still see them, but lights would bounce and project psychedelic shapes, lines, and colors onto the walls of the tent. It was absolutely mindblowing. I have never seen anything like it done before or since!

One of my favorites! First EP West is even better.

I’ve loved that song since I first heard it, and I initially got turned on to them because their song “Sol 107 Pt. 1” was on an In Search Of Syd (Barrett) CD that Mojo magazine released in 2007. Great stuff!

Must have a proper listen to this later (not 3:30am/phone speaker!)

If you’re interested in some hot funk rock then you must check out ‘High Fade’ - 3 virtuoso lads from Edinburgh who are knocking it out of the park right now… Just released their debut album: ‘Life’s Too Fast’, available on all the usual streaming platforms - Seriously brilliant (and no, I’m not affiliated in any way; just a fan).

This band is absolutely amazing! I discovered them several years ago, looked up their tour schedule and found out that they'd just played PsychFest in Austin a few weeks before. And I live in Austin! Dammit! And now it seems they're on indefinite hiatus.

And BTW…Ripley Johnson’s other two bands, Moon Duo & Rose City Band, are equally as great.

I saw them at a festival. Knew nothing about them. They were fantastic. The Gories also played. So great. Oh, then P-Funk crushed it. 2018.

Nice, will check out both.

The whole album by WS is great. Stacked wood to it the other day. Thanks for sharing.

P-funk, if you are new to them, start with Funkadelic's 'Maggot Brain'. Can't lose.

Crinkly, jangley and smooth all at the same time. I like it.

How about my new, compilation double album 'Woke Up this Morning' (geddit?). It's a selection of original songs created between the late 80s and 2016. The are three more of my albums on on Bandcamp too! https://steveswindells.bandcamp.com/album/woke-up-this-morning
